Dear Terry,
I am glad to have received your letter, asking me about the customs to follow to be a guest in a Chinese friend’s home.
Among other things, the following three deserve your special attention. First of all, you are supposed to arrive at your friend’s home at least 10 minutes earlier, which makes it convenient for the host to arrange the chairs. Secondly, gifts like a bunch of flowers, a bottle of wine or a box of tea are usually welcome. Thirdly, while having food at table, all the guests as well as the host and the hostess are expected to start eating at the same time and people should not talk with their mouths full of food.
